The School, The Job, The Money.
Today I went to Full Sail for their ‘Behind the Scenes Tour’. Basically, it’s an open house to all visitors, students and family. They hold this event once a month and talk about not only the program prospective students are interested in, but also all of their programs and events.
I just have to say; this school is amazing! Everything they own is state-of-the-art. The students, teachers, and staff are all very down-to-earth people with a passion for this industry. This school has everything any undergraduate to even graduate could want and then some. The film department just got me a little to over excited when we visited all the rooms with equipment after equipment. I felt like running over to the cameras and playing with them! And, oh my gawd, their sound editing systems were HUGE! Bigger then what I’ve seen in a recording studio, it was crazy! They also showed us the many graduates and their accomplishments through out the years, and I have to say mostly everything you see out there has at least one Full Sail graduate on board. I love it!
Of course, where there is happiness, sadness is always at toe. Finally we get to the end of the tour, where we are able to meet with admission and financial aid representatives and faculty. Their film department in the span of 21 months comes out to be a whomping $69,175.00 dollars! That’s $23,025.00 dollars every 7 months. My mother, who accompanied me on this event, jaw dropped when we were told this. I mean, I knew it was expensive but not THIS expensive. Do you know how many loans I would/will need to take out for this? I’d be in debt before I could even start my life. A year and nine months till I’d graduate and then six to seven months later, I’d have to start paying my dues.
And even after all of this has been said and done, I am still interested in going to this school! Woe is me. =(
Sadly, I did not get the job as Westgate. The man called me back and told me that at that time they really needed someone with expert skills in Flash and action-scripting. I’m not going to lie, I SUCK in Flash, but I do know the program, since I had to make a mock company website using Flash and made a menu made purely with action-script, but I guess it wasn’t good enough for them. My hopes of finding a well off job in web design are sinking fast and I feel that I should just stick to freelancing and find a part-time job doing something else. In the end, I need money, no matter how I get it. (OK so it DOES matter how I get, if you get my drift…ha ha)
So, for the rest of this week, I will be trying to find as many grants, loans, and scholarships I can find and fill out an application for them. God only knows I will need them.

Oh! I’ve heard about them. In fact, I got something in the mail from them O_o; don’t know why. I got a magazine from them but….that place is waaaay too expensive |D I’d rather do The Art Institute Online ^^;
You and me both need to get a job :/ Maybe you could work at a book store? That’s what I’m thinking about since I love books and it’s fun putting the new ones on shelves :3
As for the comment on my site, yay for the darkside! Darkside is fun : D Thank you about the header. I had fun, hehe.
Good luck finding a job :3

I go to the Art Institute and it’s even more expensive. Good school but I’m going to be in so much debt after I graduate. So far I feel it is worth it.
Good luck on the scholarship / loan search!

OMG! Full Sail is the school I want to go to!
This entry just wants to make me go even more.
What do you want to do exactly? Because film schools are OUTRAGEOUS. Especially the one in New York. Full Sail is a lot cheap (by thousands) compared to other schools and you graduate sooner.
Good luck with everything and that’s amazing that you actually got to go to the behind the scenes tour!!

Wow. That’s…quite a bit of money there. I have almost 20K in student loans and I’m thinking that’s a lot of money! Then I read about the cost of tuition for the school you wanted to go, and I almost had a heart attack! I could never imagine being in debt that much.
But the school sounds great! So maybe it’s definitely worth it. Sorry to hear that you didn’t get the job. Don’t worry, something will come around soon enough!

Sucks about the cost, but it’s true for most colleges with a good rep. Just think of it this way: the money you will spend in loans, etc is an investment. Without spending that money on your education, you could be one, sacrificing a great experience, and two, end up not making as much money in life. It may seem like a lot of money now, but if you can get a job making $45-$100K a year, it will completely pay off in the end.
I completely fell in love with CU Boulder and CSU (in Colorado, where I live). Even though I would be an in-state student, the cost for both was roughly $16K for the first year (in a dorm) and about $8-10K out of a dorm, and that seemed expensive to me. Then again, my parents can only help me so much and most of the financial burden is on my end and I presume your situation is the same way. I know I will most likely be anywhere from $10-20K in debt by the time I am done with school, but for now I am at a community college and my parents are helping me a lot. I like it so far, yet I see all my friends at Universities and it makes me a little jealous and also feel like I am missing out on a once in a life time opportunity… if you think living in a three-foot wide box with another human is the opportunity of a lifetime… lol.
Anyway, I wish you the best and hope you can figure out a way to pay for the school of your dreams!

That really is expensive, but if you really like it, then you should go with what your heart tells you. Just think of the reward at the end.
Good luck with finding a job!

Wow. That’s expensive. USC was close to that price once you finished paying all of the tuition + fees + dorm + food + supplies. lol. Good luck with everything!

Wow that is a lot of money. I think as someone mentioned if the chances are high that you will be making good money in the end I guess it will be worth it because you can pay it off. It will be stressful no question. If you think you can pull it off then I say don’t let anything get in the way of your dream. I think talking it over with your mom and going over the pros and cons would be beneficial.
Im sorry about the job, keep at it though. Im sure if you got the mock site and menus done in flash you’ll be all good. There is ALWAYS oppertunites out there its just about finding them. If you have the desire, which sounds like you do, then they will come.. lol sounds like a movie line or something.
Thank you for the advice BTW, I appreciate it
